Levulinic acid
levulinic acid is one of the top bio-based platform molecules that can be converted into many valuable chemicals.It can be produced by acid catalysis from renewable resources,such as sugars, lignocellulosic biomass and waste materials, attractive candidates due to their abundance and environmentally benign nature. The LA transition from niche product to mass-produced chemical, however, requires its production from sustainable biomass feedstocks at low costs, adopting environment-friendly techniques.
Levulinic acid is white Flake Crystal, flammable, hygroscopic. Soluble in water and alcohol, ether organic solvents. Distillation at atmospheric pressure hardly decomposes, and if heated for a long time, water is lost to become unsaturated Y-lactone. Melting point 37.2 °c. Boiling point 139~140 deg C (lkPa). The relative density was 1.1335. Refractive index 4396.
Levulinic Acid - Applications
This product is mainly used as raw material for manufacturing resins ,medicines, spice perfumes and coatings. In the pharmaceutical industry, its calcium salts can be made into intravenous injection and indomethacin, etc. Its lower esters can be usedas food flavor and tobacco flavor. The bisphenol acid made from this product can produce water-soluble resin, which can be used in paper industry to produce filter paper. It can also be used to make pesticides, dyes and surfactants. It is also used as an extraction and separation agent for aromatic compounds.
